✨ A Brief History of Red Laser Light Therapy
Red laser light therapy has an illuminating past — one that began in the 1960s, not long after the invention of the first laser in 1960 by Theodore Maiman. Initially, scientists were exploring lasers for surgical precision, but something unexpected happened…
🌱 The Accidental Discovery
In 1967, Hungarian physician Dr. Endre Mester conducted experiments on mice to test laser radiation. He noticed that red laser light not only didn’t harm the skin—it actually accelerated hair regrowth and wound healing. This serendipitous moment marked the birth of what we now call photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT).
🔬 How It Works
Red light (typically around 630–660nm) penetrates the skin and interacts with mitochondria — the "powerhouses" of our cells — to boost energy production (ATP), reduce inflammation, and support tissue repair. When combined with near-infrared light (800–850nm), the benefits extend even deeper into joints, muscles, and fat layers.
Finally a review from Cleber Ferraresi (also in Brazil) reviews a large number of papers that have investigated PBM to increase muscle performance in humans. Many of these studies have been conducted in athletes, where PBM can improve acute muscle performance and reduce muscle damage after exercise. PBM may also be used to advantage during a program of athletic training.
